The city

About Bordeaux

Bordeaux is a city built of honey-coloured stone and very good wine. It sits on a great curve of the Garonne in southwest France, where the river swings like a crescent moon, and it wears one of France's most beautiful faces: mile after mile of elegant eighteenth-century facades, pale gold in the afternoon. All around lie the vineyards that made its name.

For two thousand years Bordeaux has grown rich on the river and its wine. The Romans planted the first vines; English kings shipped its claret home; and in the Age of Enlightenment its merchants tore down the medieval walls and rebuilt the whole riverfront in serene classical stone. They call the old town the Port of the Moon, for that crescent of water; it holds more historic monuments than any French city but Paris.

For a while the city slept, its grand stone gone black with soot. Then, not long ago, it scrubbed itself golden, tore up the old docks, and came alive. Today it is young and stylish, full of students and wine bars, its quays a promenade by the water. And wine is everywhere: in the glass, in the shops, and in the great châteaux of the Médoc and Saint-Émilion up the road.

A few sights capture it. Along the river stands a perfect classical square, and before it a thin sheet of water mirrors the whole facade, a favourite place to paddle on a hot day. Nearby rises a grand old opera house, all columns and gold. And on the waterfront, a swirling modern tower devoted to wine lets you taste the whole region in a glass.

End the day on the quays at golden hour, a glass of Bordeaux red in hand, as the low sun turns the stone frontage to amber and the river runs pink beneath the bridges. Barges drift toward the sea, the cafés fill, and the whole city glows. Bordeaux takes its time, and its pleasures seriously. Sit down, pour a glass, and let it work on you.
